Questions to ask your fiancé as you start wedding planning

When you are just starting the wedding planning process, it is easy to get overwhelmed by the to-do list that seems to be longer than a CVS receipt…  BUT I am here to help you get this process started right! The first thing that I recommend you do as you start planning your wedding is talk to your fiancé! Mind blowing right?! It is a simple concept, but it is often an important step that gets overlooked.

Here are a few questions that I think every couple should talk through before any wedding related decisions are made.

#1. Do you want a big wedding?

Whether you have a large or small wedding is one of the first things you should talk with your partner about. You may want to start a draft-guest list to give you an idea of who you both would like to invite. Ask yourself who are our nonnegotiable guests? Is there anyone you would only invite out of obligation? Having an idea of the number of guests you will have will give you a better idea of what you will need from a venue, what your budget could be, and whether it is realistic to travel for your wedding day or not.

#2. Do you want to stay local or travel?

This is a big one! Where do you want to get married? This can be especially tricky if the two of you are not from the same city, state, or part of the world. Talk through the potential locations and then give pros and cons for each. Also bring up locations that are special like a church you grew up going to or a family members’ home that is special to you.

#3. What do you want the vibes of the day to be?

Do you want your day to be elegant? Fun? Emotional? Wild? Pick out a few words that you want to describe your day and share them with your partner.

#4. What are we willing to spend on our wedding? And will we be the only ones contributing?

Budget is probably the BIGGEST factor in wedding planning. This will determine what type of wedding you can have, how many people you can invite, where the wedding will be, and so much more.

#5. What are the most important things to you on this day?

Are the two of you into dancing? Do you really love food? Do you want photos that make your jaw drop when you see them? Do you like little details? Is having family there important? Does the design matter to you? Talk through everything that is important to each of you. Knowing what you and your partner are looking forward to will help you know what to focus on during the planning process.
