Tips to feel more comfortable in front of the camera

Do you want to hire a photographer and have your memories captured, but you just don’t feel comfortable in front of a camera? Does smiling, stiff and awkward into a strangers lens sound like your worst nightmare?

If you feel this way, trust me, you are not alone!! I am the exact same! While most of my time is spent behind a camera, as soon as I step in front of a camera, I IMMEDIATELY feel super awkward and uncomfortable! BUT because I have experienced this myself, I have made it my top priority to make sure my clients don’t feel this way!

So, if you are slightly terrified of posing during your session, keep reading and I’ll give you some tips on how to avoid those negative feelings during your session!

Tip #1 Just move

First things first- MOVE.

If you can do one thing to make yourself more comfortable during a photo session, that is to move! Walk, twirl your partner, sway back and forth- there are thousands of tiny little movements you can add to your posing that will help you feel less awkward. AND movement looks SO good on camera. It gives a timeless, storytelling vibe that is just so stinkin cute!

So, when in doubt, just move.

Tip #2 Choose an activity

Another option that could help you feel less awkward and stiff in your photos is choosing an activity! Pick something that you and your partner love doing together- going out for ice cream, having a picnic on the beach, playing mini golf, painting- literally any activity can be turned into a super cute photo op.

Your photos will reflect that you are having a good time with your partner and that always results in super cute photos!

Tip #3 Pick the right photographer

This is a BIG one. Ultimately, which photographer you choose is going to determine how comfortable you feel in front of the camera. Do you feel comfortable around this photographer? Do other people look comfortable in their photos? Ask yourself these questions before hiring a photographer so that you can make sure you get the best experience from your session.

Tip #4 Don’t be afraid to communicate that you feel uncomfortable!

It is your photographers job to make you feel comfortable! Don’t be afraid to let them know that you don’t normally feel comfortable in front of the camera. This will help your photographer prepare themselves better for your session!

You shouldn’t be afraid of booking the photo session of your dreams just because you are worried about feeling uncomfortable in front of the camera. Just remember, your session is supposed to be FUN! Use these tips to help you feel more comfortable and to make the most of your session!
